DANGEROUS VOICES

This revelatory new book will show how the modern world is being reshaped by an information revolution. This is a global tale, written once again in Pomerantsev’s urgent storytelling style and with his inimitable and perceptive analysis. Beginning in Mexico, the book will follow the author’s travels in Ukraine on to London, Washington, Russia and Estonia to tell of a world where facts don’t matter and revolutions are started through Facebook posts. DANGEROUS VOICES will be a ground-breaking work about identity in the modern age, contemporary propaganda and how leaders try to rule through disinformation. And, importantly, a book focussing on the compelling human stories at the heart of all of this.

Peter Pomerantsev’s previous book, NOTHING IS TRUE AND EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE won the RSL Ondaatje Prize and was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award, the Gordon Burn Prize, the Pushkin House Russian Book Prize and longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize. It was voted a best book of the month and a best book of 2014 in the history category by Amazon, and was also a Radio 4 Book of the Week.

IL N’Y A PAS D’IDENTITé CULTURELLE (CULTURAL IDENTITY DOES NOT EXIST)

GOD, FAITH & IDENTITY FROM THE ASHES: REFLECTIONS OF CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS

A Powerful, Life-Affirming New Perspective on the Holocaust

Almost ninety children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors—theologians, scholars, spiritual leaders, authors, artists, political and community leaders and media personalities—from sixteen countries on six continents reflect on how the memories transmitted to them have affected their lives. Profoundly personal stories explore faith, identity and legacy in the aftermath of the Holocaust as well as our role in ensuring that future genocides and similar atrocities never happen again.

There have been many books and studies about children of Holocaust survivors—the so-called second and third generations—with a psycho-social focus. This book is different. It is intended to reflect what they believe, who they are and how that informs what they have done and are doing with their lives.

From major religious or intellectual explorations to shorter commentaries on experiences, quandaries and cultural, political and personal affirmations, contributors respond to this question: how have your parents’ and grandparents’ experiences and examples helped shape your identity and your attitudes toward God, faith, Judaism, the Jewish people and the world as a whole?

For people of all faiths and backgrounds, these powerful and deeply moving statements will have a profound effect on the way our and future generations understand and shape their understanding of the Holocaust.

Menachem Z. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, who survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, has been the preeminent voice of conscience and Holocaust memory throughout the seven decades since the end of World War II. In 1984, Professor Wiesel delivered the keynote address at the First International Conference of Children of Holocaust Survivors in New York City, and he has graciously allowed us to publish excerpts from that address as his charge to the post-Holocaust generations as we explore who we are, what we believe and what we stand for in the pages of this book.

THE NEW NORMAL: FINDING A BALANCE BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND THE COMMON GOOD

(LNL)

Amitai Etzioni argues that societies must find a way to balance individual rights and the common good. This point of balance may change as new technologies develop, the natural and international environments change, and new social forces arise.

Some believe the United States may be unduly shortchanging individual rights that need to be better protected. Specifically, should the press be granted more protection? Or should its ability to publish state secrets be limited? Should surveillance of Americans and others be curtailed? Should American terrorists be treated differently from others? How one answers these questions, Etzioni shows, invites a larger fundamental question: Where is the proper point of balance between rights and security?

Etzioni implements the social philosophy, “liberal communitarianism.” Its key assumptions are that neither individual rights nor the common good should be privileged, that both are core values, and that a balance is necessary between them. Etzioni argues that we need to find a new balance between our desire for more goods, services, and affluence, particularly because economic growth may continue to be slow and jobs anemic. The key question is what makes a good life, especially for those whose basic needs are sated.
