Four Trials
by John Edwards
1230.00 32开 237页
|
|
|
|
内容简介:
|
It
was in the courtroom that I learned how, when you build a case, every detail
matters and every bit counts. And I learned that you can never for a moment
forget the big picture or the broad ambitions of justice....I came to
genuinely understand how smart and decent all kinds of regular people are --
even at the worst moments in their lives. And I learned how our great system
can often discount the hardships and genuine suffering of such people -- and
how it can sometimes seem to forget their struggle almost completely.
Four
Trials provides an electrifying account of four of his cases as it tells the
story of the courageous and unmistakably decent people Edwards was privileged
to represent in times of tragedy, great loss, and often great joy. And in a
deeply moving account, Four Trials also speaks of the tragedies and joys that
Senator Edwards has known in his own life -- and how today life and justice
are more precious to him than ever.

Blessed Mother Teresa
by T.T. Munkadel

|
|
|
|
内容简介:
|
Mother
Teresa is widely recognized as one of the most inspiring and best-loved figures
of the 20th century. Around the age of 18, she joined the Irish order of the
Sisters of Loreto and, in 1950, founded her own order, the Missionaries of
Charity, whose work was to provide "free service to the poor and
unwanted, irrespective of caste, creed, nationality or race". She firmly
believed that there could not be any worship more sublime than the service of
humanity, and in 1970 she was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for her work.
The
author spent many hours with Mother Teresa, and much of Blessed Mother Teresa
is in her own words. Following her life from her childhood in Albania, via Dublin, to the streets of Calcutta, this book exudes her
love, dignity and faith. Authorized by her community in Calcutta, it is a simple and
compelling tribute to a remarkable person, whose charity and compassion
touched the world.

Baudelaire in Chains
by Frank Hilton
1072.50 145*225mm 269页
|
|
|
|
内容简介:
|
It
is commonly known that Baudelaire used opium. Many writers have described him
as being addicted to the drug, but few biographers, Frank Hilton argues, have
fully understood the effect of opiate addiction on personality, and, in the
case of Baudelaire, the extent to which it damaged his life and work. It is a
subject that is usually treated as some kind of bolt-on extra. In this
fascinating and original contribution to Baudelaire studies Hilton contends
that the drug is at the root of ALL Baudelaire's problems, and in particular
his chronic inability to apply himself to any prolonged creative work which
constantly tormented him. Unquestionably there is significantly more to
Baudelaire than his opium addiction. But a proper awareness of what it did to
the poet helps to illuminate those puzzling aspects of his life and behaviour that were not previously understood. Written
with the general reader in mind, Baudelaire in Chains will give those who
know little or nothing about him a comprehensive picture of his life. To
those who know a great deal it will present him in an unexpected light. Most
of Baudelaire's works have been made available in English, including several
award-winning translations over the last decade. However there have been only
2 major biographies of Baudelaire in the last 20 years: by Joanna Richardson
(John Murray, 1994) and Pichois and Ziegler (Hamish
Hamilton, 1989). Neither title is currently in print and
neither deals with Baudelaire's opium addiction.

Ordinary Man is an exciting new study of the life and times of Miguel de Cervantes,

European novel.
Based

material about his long period of captivity, his involvement in piracy in the
Mediterranean, espionage and the Spanish Armada, No Ordinary Man contains
much information that has never been available before in English and adds a
much needed contribution to the understanding of this unique and exciting
individual.

In the Ghost Country

John E. Elder

|
|
|
内容简介:
|
A
memoir of extraordinary depth and searing honesty, In the Ghost Country is
the story of Peter Hillary's physical and emotional journey across the icy
wastes of Antarctica. A place where the thoughts and
memories of a lifetime were called forth by the blank slate of the Antarctic
snows -- so real that the ghosts of lost friends and loved ones walked with
him in the white maelstrom.
The
true journey in exploration is the emotional and cerebral struggle one faces
on epic adventures. In the Ghost Country clearly articulates the consuming
internal conflicts and team dynamics every expedition experiences. An
outstanding account of adventure, courage, and endurance.

When
Peter Hillary climbed Mt. Everest in 1990, thirty seven
years after his father’s historic first ascent in 1953, they became the first
father and son to reach the top of the world. It was just one of more than
thirty major expeditions to the Himalayas, the Andes, the KaraKoram, the Arctic, and the Antarctic.
John Elder is a senior writer for
The Sunday Age newspaper in Melbourne, renowned for writing
about the more desperate side of the human experience. In 1986, as a crew
member of the “In the Footsteps of Scott” Antarctic expedition, he stood on
the pack ice and watched his ship Southern Quest sink to the bottom of the Ross Sea.

Ready For Revolution
by Stokely
Carmichael
1198.10 835页 160*235mm
|
|
|
|
内容简介:
|
By
any measure, Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) fundamentally
altered the course of history. Published at the fifth anniversary of Carmichael's death, this
long-awaited autobiography fills a yawning gap in the American historical
record as it chronicles the legendary civil rights leader's work as chairman
of SNCC, patriarch of Black Power, Pan-African activist, and social
revolutionary. It is an unflinching, searing, often visionary testament to
the man's legacy and joins the works of Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois, Malcolm X, and Nelson Mandela as a crucial and
colorful contribution to contemporary history.
As
in life, the Carmichael in these pages is the definition
of charisma and determination. In sharp prose full of Carmichael's candor, wit,
irrepressible sense of irony, and undying love for his people, Ready for
Revolution relates with clear-eyed intelligence the epic struggle for human
liberation in our time. Carmichael -- who in 1978 changed his name to
Kwame Ture in honor of
his mentors, the revolutionary African leaders Kwame
Nkrumah and Sekou Toure
-- recounts the course of his own experience and struggles, ranging from the
prison farms and lynch mobs of Mississippi through the firefights
and political intrigue of the African liberation wars to Black Power and Pan-Africanism. His transformation from immigrant child to
impassioned activist is spellbinding. Populated with an international cast of
luminaries, including James Baldwin, Fannie Lou Hamer,
Miriam Makeba, Shirley Graham Du
Bois, Toni Morrison, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Ho Chi Minh, and Fidel Castro, Ready for Revolution captures, as
few books ever have, the pulse of the cultural upheavals that define the
modern world.
More
than the sum of its parts, this book is the personal testimony of a supremely
courageous and committed African-American freedom fighter, radical thinker,
and warm and engaging human being. Regardless of whether one subscribes to Carmichael's politics and ideas,
there is no denying the overwhelming influence he had on American lives and
history. And his view from the eye of the black-struggle storm is invaluable.

Napoleon: A Political life
by Steven Englund

|
内容简介:
|
This
sophisticated and masterful biography, written by a respected French history
scholar who has taught courses on Napoleon at the University of Paris, brings new and
remarkable analysis to the study of modern history's most famous general and
statesman.
Let
me put this bluntly: I have never before read a book that simultaneously
impressed me for its scholarly brilliance yet read like a novel. Englund's examination of Napoleon's apolitical politics
of la Nation is must reading for historians, yet his opening description of
the Emperor's tomb at Les Invalides is worthy of
Balzac.
