Tony Hefner
(Ruby & Chris)
Something at the Texas detention facility is terribly wrong, and Tony Hefner knows it. But the guards are repeatedly instructed not to speak of anything they witness. In the Rio Grande Valley, one of the most poverty-stricken areas in the United States, good jobs are scarce and the detention facility pays the best wages for a hundred miles. The guards follow orders and keep quiet.
For six years, Tony Hefner was a security guard at the Port Isabel Service Processing Center, one of the largest immigration detention centers in America, and witnessed alarming corruption and violations of basic human rights. Officers preyed upon the very people whom they are sworn to protect. On behalf of the 1,100 men, women, and children residing there on an average day, and the 1,500 new undocumented immigrants who pass through its walls every month, this is the story of the systematic sexual, physical, financial, and drug-related abuses of detainees by guards.
The Port Isabel Service Processing Center continues to hold detainees of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement whose immigration statuses or citizenship have not been officially determined or who are awaiting repatriation. On April 22, 2009, detainees there began a hunger strike, alleging violations of due process, inadequate access to medical care and legal resources, and various other abuses.
Tony Hefner is a human rights activist and founder of the Bearing Precious Seed Ranch ministry in southern Texas for local Hispanic children. He has appeared on Inside Edition, PBS, and many other radio and television news programs where he reported the abuses taking place at Port Isabel. Tony and his wife Barbara now live in northern Michigan, where he continues his fight with national officials for new investigations.

Enter Mourning powerfully chronicles the author’s difficult journey through her mother’s decline and death from an insidious condition. From dismissing her mother’s dementia to moving her into a nursing home, Menzies must continuously shift her focus while dealing with difficult emotions raised by her brother and sister. Balancing poetic language and practical sensibilities, Enter Mourning limns a mother losing her grip on reality and a daughter coming to grips with her own as she chronicles her transformative journey from self-interested baby boomer to a “slower, more rhythmic language of touch, gesture, and cadence.”

From a detailed look at what happens in the intense moments immediately preceding and following birth, to an eye-popping history of painkillers, birthing methods and infant resuscitation, Sloan shows how millions of years of human history are encapsulated in one day - in the universal experience of childbirth and the first day of life. Part memoir, part narrative, part science and history, this audio focuses on both the biology and wonder of human birth. This title combines history, biology, and culture with humor, compassion, and real-life anecdotes and gives equal emphasis to the clinical and emotional aspects of this timeless experience.
Mark Sloan, M.D., has been a pediatrician and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics for more than twenty-five years. He is one of the highest-rated pediatricians (by patients and peers) in Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California region. His writing has appeared in the Chicago Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle, among other publications. He lives in Santa Rosa, California, with his wife and two teenage children, who continue to provide him with a wealth of practical pediatric experience.
获奖情况介绍: “Sloan covers a lot of ground, and it’s clear he’s read widely and done a lot of research in a variety of disciplines, from anthropology to world history… well-researched and funny… Birth Day is an excellent primer from an engaging author.” —The San Francisco Chronicle
“Sloan, who practices in Northern California, is a graceful writer, and his narrative, like the works of Jerome Groopman, flows easily between memoir, anecdotal reporting and hard science… Anyone interested in the complex and, yes, miraculous way we all make it into this world will find lots to wonder over and ponder here.” ––The Washington Post
“California pediatrician Sloan has helped deliver more than 3,000 babies, and he marvelously captures the precarious nature of childbirth—both its joys and anxieties—while treating readers to an informal and captivating history of the medical practices surrounding birth in America.” ––Publishers’ Weekly (starred review)
“What boosts Sloan’s book above other pediatrician memoirs is his Captain Kangaroo-like humor and compassion… With its crisp and upbeat tone, Sloan’s book is good company for parents experienced and prospective alike.” —Booklist
“No one has described the intricate timing and sequence of a baby’s miracle transition from inside its mother to breathing on its own more clearly or beautifully than Dr. Mark Sloan, who has focused on the baby during thousands of births and understands what needs to happen, and what can go wrong. Sloan covers the various approaches to pain-management during labor and their effects on both mother and child, and he supports adding nitrous oxide—safe and widely used for labor in so many other countries—to the very limited alternatives now available to women in America.” ––Judith P. Rooks, CNM, MPH, author of Midwifery & Childbirth in America
“I have given birth twice, but until this book never grasped the true wonder of what happens to mother and child during childbirth. An amazing, tender, funny book about our bigheaded species.” ––Adair Lara, author of Hold Me Close, Let me Go “Birth Day is a wonderful book. Dr. Sloan has accomplished the impossible, combining the history, biology, sociology and medicine of childbirth into an informative, yet amusing, story. Expectant parents will find this book useful and reassuring. So will physicians. Personal stories of medical school, resident training and practice that Dr. Sloan incorporated into this narrative brought back memories and elicited many smiles. Birth Day is a ’must’ for new parents and for professionals.” --Donald Caton, M.D.
California pediatrician Sloan has helped deliver more than 3,000 babies, and he marvelously captures the precarious nature of childbirth—both its joys and its anxieties—while treating readers to an informal and captivating history of the medical practices surrounding birth in America. Sloan shares his first bumbled attempts at delivering babies as an intern, which leads him into reflect on why doctors persist in having women lie down to give birth when standing or squatting are better physical postures for it. Sloan ranges surely and splendidly over epidurals, cesarean births, premature birth and neonatal nurseries, as well as the state of an infant’s five senses at birth. For example, he points out that the fetus not only smells the foods its mother eats, it remembers them after birth and tends to like what it remembers. Sloan counsels that women cannot prepare for labor, because events change rapidly during the process. He advises women to surround themselves with the people they love: “unlike other labor pain relievers she may choose, their benefits will last the rest of her life.” --Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW.

CONSIDER THE BIRDS: HOW THEY LIVE AND WHY THEY MATTER |
 |
All animals are equal – but some, as George Orwell said, are more equal than others, and birds, most people would surely agree, are in the very first rank. They can do almost everything that mammals can do – and more besides. By mastering flight, they have a way of living that encompasses the whole world. In Consider The Birds Colin Tudge explores the life of birds, all around the globe. From the secrets of migration to their complicated family lives, their differing habitats and survival techniques to the secrets of flight, this is a fascinating account of how birds live, why they matter, and whether they really are dinosaurs. Featuring birds who navigate using star-maps, tool-making crows and the great co-operation of the penguins, Colin Tudge shows how birds – who are like us in the general sense but very different in the particulars – live and think. For birds have minds: they feel, they are aware, they work things out. And so, by considering the birds, asking how and why it is possible for them to be so different, we gain insight into ourselves. Birds are beautiful, lively, intriguing – and all around us. This rich and endlessly absorbing book opens up their lives to everyone.
When Colin Tudge was a small boy in South London he could recognize only five kinds of birds. Following a childhood spent at London Zoo and in conversation by the seaside with a bird-watching cousin, he began to perceive that ‘ordinary birds’ included pipits and wagtails, terns and kestrels, yellowhammers and robins, and a miscellany of crows, not all of which were black. So began a lifelong interest in birds and how they live. After studying zoology at Cambridge, Colin began writing about science, first as features editor at the New Scientist and then as a documentary maker for BBC radio. Now a full-time writer, he appears regularly as a public speaker in all kinds of venues, including the University of Beijiny and St Paul’s Cathedral. A Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, he was a visiting Research Fellow at the Centre of Philosophy at the London School of Economics for ten years. He is passionate about food and farming and is currently involved in the founding of The Landshare Trust for Enlightened Agriculture. His books include The Secret Life of Trees, The Variety of Life and So Shall We Reap. The Secret Life of Trees(樹的秘密生活)、The Variety of Life(生活的多元化)和So Shall We Reap(我們應該如何耕種)。
Tudge’s writing is always clear and frequently embellished with wry humour. Occasionally, it is inspired ... There are not many books that clearly explain the science behind the extravagant diversity of birds and how they live.---Richard Fortey, Sunday Telegraph An author whose own deep relish for the extraordinary lives of birds seems only marginally less pleasurable to him than sharing that wonder with others. Simply fizzing with ideas Some of the conclusions are truly surprising, and it’s that sense of discovery that makes it such a pleasure to read.

DISTRACTED: THE EROSION OF ATTENTION AND THE COMING DARK AGE |
 |
Foreword by Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and The Bill McKibben Reader. We have vast oceans of information at our disposal, yet increasingly we seek knowledge with brief glimpses at the Yahoo headlines while juggling other tasks. We are networked as never before, but we tend to communicate even with our most intimate friends and family via instant messaging, email, and fleeting face-to-face moments that are rescheduled a dozen times, then punctuated when they do occur with pings and beeps and more multitasking. Welcome to the land of distraction. Despite our wondrous technologies and scientific advances, we are nurturing a culture of diffusion, fragmentation, and detachment. In this new world, something is amiss. And that something is--attention. Journey with Maggie Jackson as she explores the many ways in which we are eroding our capacity for deep, sustained attention-the building block of intimacy, wisdom, and cultural progress. In her sweeping quest to unravel the nature of attention and detail its erosion, she introduces us to scientists, cartographers, marketers, educators, wired teens, virtual lovers from the telegraph age, and roboticists building smart machines to comfort and care for us. She takes us from the nineteenth-century roots of our mobile, virtual multitasking ways into a darkening future of snippets, glimpses, skimming, McThinking, and mistrust. Taking us beyond Blink and Faster, Jackson makes it clear that if we continue down this road of scattered attention spans and widespread societal ADD, we will be in danger of squandering and devaluing the essence of humanity, and our technological age could ultimately slip into cultural decline. But we are just as capable of igniting a renaissance of attention by strengthening our varied powers of focus and perception, the keys to judgment, memory, morality, and happiness. She describes some of the exciting new scientific research that shows how these skills can be nurtured. Distraction is unique in being simultaneously an original exposé of the multifaceted nature of attention, an engaging and often surprising portrait of postmodern life, and a compelling roadmap for cultivating sustained focus and nurturing a more enriched and literate society. Pull over, hit the pause button, silence the ringer, and prepare to encounter our land of distraction--this may be your first, and maybe your last, chance to really fathom it.

In this richly detailed and passionately argued book, Jackson (What’s Happening to Home?) warns that modern society’s inability to focus heralds an impending Dark Age—an era historically characterized by the decline of a civilization amid abundance and technological advancement. Jackson posits that “our near-religious allegiance to a constant state of motion” and addiction to multitasking are “eroding our capacity for deep, sustained, perceptive attention—the building block of intimacy, wisdom and cultural progress” and stunting society’s ability to “comprehend what’s relevant and permanent.” The author provides a lively historical survey of attention, drawing upon philosophy, the impact of scientific innovations and her own experiences to investigate the possible genetic and psychological roots of distraction. While Jackson cites modern virtual life (the social network Facebook and online interactive game Second Life), her research is largely mired in the previous century, and she draws weak parallels between romance via telegraph and online dating, and supernatural spiritualism and a newfound desire to reconnect. Despite the detours (a cultural history of the fork?), Jackson has produced a well-rounded and well-researched account of the travails facing an ADD society and how to reinvigorate a “renaissance of attention.”--Publisher’s Weekly "This is an important book. I found it to be a harrowing documentation of our modern world’s descent into fragmentation, self alienation, and emptiness - brought on, to a large extent, by communication technologies that distract us, dislocate us, and destroy our inner lives. Others have commented on these issues, but I have never seen them gathered together and documented as completely as Maggie Jackson has done."--ALAN LIGHTMAN, MIT professor and author of the bestselling Einstein’s Dreams and National Book Award finalist The Diagnosis NPR ’s Diane Rehm Show "Distraction and Democracy" http://wamu.org/programs/dr/08/06/10.php#20324 "Shifting Careers" blog in the New York Times Business section guest blogged by Maggie Jackson. GRAVE SECRETS OF DINOSAURS: SOFT TISSUES AND HARD SCIENCE |
 |
Many of us have seen dinosaur bones and skeletons, maybe even dinosaur eggs...but what did those fearsome animals really look like in the flesh? Soft-tissue fossils give tantalizing clues about the appearance and physiology of the ancient animals. In this exciting book, paleontologist Phillip Manning presents the most astonishing dinosaur fossil excavations of the past 100 years—including the recent discovery of a remarkably intact dinosaur mummy in the Badlands of North Dakota. Bone structure is just the beginning of our knowledge today, thanks to amazing digs like these. Drawing on new breakthroughs and cutting-edge techniques of analysis, Dr. Manning takes us on a thrilling, globe-spanning tour of dinosaur mummy finds—from the first such excavation in 1908 to a baby dinosaur unearthed in 1980, from a dino with a heart in South Dakota to titanosaur embryos in Argentina. And he discusses his own groundbreaking analysis of "Dakota," discovered by Tyler Lyson. Using state-of-the-art technology to scan and analyse this remarkable discovery, National Geographic and Dr. Manning create an incredibly lifelike portrait of Dakota. The knowledge to be gained from this exceedingly rare find, and those that came before it, will intrigue dinosaur-loving readers of all ages.
Dr. Phillip Manning teaches vertebrate paleontology and evolution at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He has built an international reputation for his work on dinosaur trackways and biomechanics, with extensive field experience at Jurassic and Cretaceous sites in North and South America and the British Isles. He is recognized for his leading role in engaging the public’s interest in the wonders of science.

 |
Buon appetito! Everyone loves Italian food. But how did the Italians come to eat so well? The answer lies amid the vibrant beauty of Italy’s historic cities. For a thousand years, they have been magnets for everything that makes for great eating: ingredients, talent, money, and power. Italian food is city food. From the bustle of medieval Milan’s marketplace to the banqueting halls of Renaissance Ferrara; from street stalls in the putrid alleyways of nineteenth-century Naples to the noisy trattorie of postwar Rome: in rich slices of urban life, historian and master storyteller John Dickie shows how taste, creativity, and civic pride blended with princely arrogance, political violence, and dark intrigue to create the world’s favorite cuisine. Delizia! is much more than a history of Italian food. It is a history of Italy told through the flavors and character of its cities. A dynamic chronicle that is full of surprises, Delizia! draws back the curtain on much that was unknown about Italian food and exposes the long-held canards. It interprets the ancient Arabic map that tells of pasta’s true origins, and shows that Marco Polo did not introduce spaghetti to the Italians, as is often thought, but did have a big influence on making pasta a part of the American diet. It seeks out the medieval recipes that reveal Italy’s long love affair with exotic spices, and introduces the great Renaissance cookery writer who plotted to murder the Pope even as he detailed the aphrodisiac qualities of his ingredients. It moves from the opulent theater of a Renaissance wedding banquet, with its gargantuan ten-course menu comprising hundreds of separate dishes, to the thin soups and bland polentas that would eventually force millions to emigrate to the New World. It shows how early pizzas were disgusting and why Mussolini championed risotto. Most important, it explains the origins and growth of the world’s greatest urban food culture. With its delectable mix of vivid storytelling, groundbreaking research, and shrewd analysis, Delizia! is as appetizing as the dishes it describes. This passionate account of Italy’s civilization of the table will satisfy foodies, history buffs, Italophiles, travelers, students -- and anyone who loves a well-told tale.

"Revelatory history of gourmet Italy from antiquity to today...Boisterous, gluttonous stories -- some verging on salacious -- are balanced by accounts of paucity in this look into Italian history and its edibles."---Publishers Weekly "A book that is as much a feast of horrors as delights...[Dickie’s] book is hard to fault: densely researched, enlightening, and consistently moreish."---The Sunday Times (London) "A literally mouth-watering read, which counters the misconception of "Italian" cuisine, as well as the myth that it originated among peasants."---The Herald "A clever and provoking account of Italy’s history...informs as well as enlightens."---The Guardian "Lots of books are written with passion about Italian food, precious few backed up with the deep historical background here presented in allegro con brio style by a clear-headed historian who rubbishes some too-persistent myths and replaces them with factual narratives no less fascinating. Dickie shows how Italian regional cuisines developed and some dishes became global icons. If we are what we eat, who wouldn’t want to be Italian?"---The Times (London)
