by JULIAN FUKS
A profound and moving novel about family and society in Latin America.

In the terrifying atmosphere of late 1970’s Buenos Aires, a young militant couple engaged in the resistance against the military regime adopt a child.Matters had reached a nadir; people were informing on friends and family members, who were then captured by the regime and subjected to horrific torture. Amid this ever-growing oppression, the couple and their baby flee to Brazil, believing it to be a more tranquil country in which to raise a family and pursue their lives.

In Brazil, the couple add to their brood with a biological son and daughter, and family relations become more complicated. As psychoanalysts, the parents are familiar with the theories on adopted and biological children, but life is always different from any theoretical discourse. It is up to Sebastion, the sensitive youngest son, to examine the family’s history of violence and exile, and, more importantly, to rewrite the family’s narrative. The result, written in a prose that is both lyrical and essayistic, is a powerful account where Sebastián’s intimate past and the history of a country overlap in an ingenious manner reminiscent of recent Argentinean fiction such as THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES.

代理商:大苹果 BARBA ENSOPADA DE SANGUE(英语译名:BLOOD-DRENCHED BEARD)
by DANIEL GALERA
Soon after the death of his father, a young sports teacher obsessed with swimming moves to Garopaba, a quiet little town on the coast of Santa Catarina in Brazil. The move is motivated by his need to grieve in private, but also his desire to investigate the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather’s murder in that town a few decades earlier.

Adapting to the slow pace of a resort town in low season, he begins to unravel the past, accompanied by his dead father’s dog and an unlikely Buddhist. In the midst of romantic flings and occasional trips, he comes to discover more than he could ever have imagined – not just about his grandfather, but also about himself.

BLOOD-SOAKED BEARD explores the growing tension between the apparently peaceful exterior world and the exuberant inner world of the characters. As in Daniel Galera’s previous works, the characters are torn between the quest for a second chance and the impossibility of genuine redemption. A subtle, wonderfully assured novel by one of Brazil’s most promising young writers.

DIARY OF THE FALL (ORIGINAL TITLE:DIARIO DA QUEDA)
by MICHEL LAUB
A grandfather who survived Auschwitz, a father with Alzheimer’s and a grandson who recounts his own life starting from an obscure accident at school during his Bar-Mitzvah year. Three generations whose stories reveal themselves to be one in this brave and original narrative about individual and historical memories that must be either retained or forgotten.

The way the author weaves his plot full of secrets and twists, establishing unexpected relations between disparate facts, is one of this book’s major triumphs. As such, a sandwich eaten in a school playground conjures up the war and the gas chambers; a drawing on a crumpled page links to a suicide; someone’s first dip in a swimming pool announces “the end of things (…), the routine that imposes itself upon them”. In a prose that oscillates between violence, lyricism and irony, with pauses for a near-documental neutrality in the description of smells, tastes, sounds, colors, facts and feelings, Diary of a Fall is a kind of response to those questions, at once simple and complex, that will always occupy the mind of a child surveying the tragedy and comedy of his forebears’ lives: why is the world the way it is? Why do people like or dislike one another? How do people become who they are?

Música Anterior (Anterior Music), 2001; Longe da água (Far from the Water), 2004;O Segundo Tempo (The Second Half), 2006; 和 O Gato Diz Adeus (Cat′s Farewell), 2009。

by EDNEY SILVESTRE
In April 1961, as Yuri Gagarin - the first man in space - leaves the Earth’s atmosphere, two 12-year old boys in a small town in the former coffee-growing region of the state of Rio de Janeiro find the mutilated body of a beautiful woman at the edge of a lake where they have gone to skive class. And so begins this page turning, thrilling novel revealing the layers of hypocrisy within Brazilian society.

The frightened boys immediately call the police, who harshly interrogate them, treating them more like suspects than as witnesses. The brutality of the murder and complete disregard for human beings shock the boys, who refuse to accept the official explanation of the crime: that her husband – the fragile town dentist, motivated by jealousy – is the culprit. They start to investigate, helped by an old man who lives in a shelter for the elderly. The man was a political prisoner during the Vargas dictatorship and hides the real reason for his interest in the case. His warning to the boys marks the beginning of a whirlwind of surprising events: ‘Nothing is what it seems in this country.’

In no time they realize that the woman has a strange connection with the town’s most important men, and that her past is nebulous, replete with lies. The investigation reveals a perverse scenario, involving sexual violence, racism, corruption and spurious political alliances – in an effort to hold on to power at any cost. All this in 1961 when Brazil is looking forward, well on the way to becoming an industrialised nation. For the boys, it is a harsh and chilling glimpse into the world of adults. A shocking coming of age in early their adolescence.

by LEONARDO PADURA FUENTES
