English Summary/英文概要: ‘Eye for an Eye comes with the Louise Welsh stamp of approval – it came to her attention partly because she judged it the winner of the 2004 Pitlochry Crime Award- and the author of The Cutting Room certainly knows a good quality filthy tale when she reads one.’ ‘a book which seeks to play with the reader’s expectations of what a crime novel is supposed to be.’-THE LIST on Eye for an Eye ‘Rebus did it for Edinburgh. Laidlaw did it for Glasgow. Gilchrist might just be the bloke to put St Andrews on the crime fiction map.’—DAILY RECORD ‘So the book, for me, gave another insight into the world of vengeance, murder and violence against the backdrop of funky shops and historical architecture.’ ‘I have heard Scottish crime writers’ books being described as Tartan Noir and with the plot lines and characters coming together mixed with the atmospheric scenes of St Andrews, you can see a definite weave emerge.’ ‘One excellent feature of the book is the contributions from the Stabber’s own min, which sets in context the reasons for the rage and vengeance but also ties the story lines together.’--‘…I see potential in Frank Muir’ HOLYROOD MAGAZINE Read this book in 2 days. Could not put it down! A real page-turner. Author has fantastice [sic] ability to bring all characters to life through use of vivid description. English Summary/英文概要: In the 18th century shotgun weddings were not unusual, but in most cases it wasn t the bride that was holding the gun. So began the stormy marriage between Lord and Lady Grange, a marriage which was to end with Lady Grange s death on the Isle of Skye after 13 years in exile. The daughter of a convicted murderer, Lady Grange s behaviour, such as her fondness for drink, was so outrageous that her sudden disappearance from public life was not considered surprising. But few knew the true story of her disappearance. This book reveals, for the first time, how the unfortunate lady was violently kidnapped and transported to the remote islands off the west coast of Scotland, spending seven years on the island of St. Kilda s. Condemned to a very different lifestyle than she had enjoyed in Edinburgh, and baffled by the strange tongue of the Gaelic West, she still obstinately survived, finally dying in Skye in 1745 (although a funeral had already been held for her years before). More than a history of scandal and infamy, ’The Prisoner of St Kilda’ gives a balanced account of both Lord and Lady Grange, their flaws and strengths, and of the role played by the powerful men who saw the unpredictable Lady Grange as a threat.

English Summary/英文概要: Review by Tom Dent I met the author when he was a student on elective in Zambia (he refers to this)and I was working in a mine hospital to save up for a deposit to buy a house. Over 30 years later he emailed me and seemed to remember it all like yesterday. Now while I am doing mostly gardening he is a Professor of neurology with an interest in Trypanosomiasis. He is aufait with pro-inflammatory cytokines while I worry about slugs eating my dahlias. His book starts with his background of working in africa goes on to the life cycle of the bug through flies, animals and humans and describes the rather scary treatment options. He also tells us of the enormous impact of the disease on the african economy. As I write my daughter is camping in Uganda near the Nile. African trypanosomiasis is suddenly very topical. I hope she remembers the insect repellant I gave her. Any billionaires wanting to adopt a tropical disease should read this book. It shows that there are real challenges out there for budding scientists.--DOCTORS.NET ‘Readers are treated to a tour of Africa by Kennedy…and his point is to inform non-scientists about the history and profound importance of human African trypanosomiasis, sleeping sickness, which holds 60 million people hostage across the continent.--BOOK NEWS INC. ‘This book, written for a lay readership, describes the problem of sleeping sickness in Africa, efforts to control it, and the author’s own experiences as part of those efforts.’--CABI, CAB Abstracts and Global Health Databases ‘In The fatal sleep: Africa’s killer diseasethat went undiscovered for centuries, Peter Kennedy presents a memoir about his fascination with this illness. His goal, he says in the preface, is “to tell the nonscientist about the history and profound importance of human African trypanosomiasis.” To achieve this goal, he relates his career experiences, first as a medical student in London, later as a clinical neurologist, and most importantly, as a researcher who, at the time of writing, had made 18 trips to Africa to study this disease. Many of his anecdotes, while not always specific to his disease-related research, offer portraits of his training as a physician-scientist and his experiences in Africa — the best of which relate his adventures in Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya.
Chinese Summary/中文概要:
About the Author/作者介绍: A concise review article by Peter Kennedy on human sleeping sickness appeared in the JCI in 2004 (2). His book, as a memoir of a life in trypanosomiasis research, calls much-needed attention to a widespread disease of poor and isolated Africans, for whom pharmaceutical companies should spend more time developing therapeutic drugs. Notably, 50% of the author’s royalties from sales of this book will be donated to charities devoted to sleeping sickness research and human health in Africa.’--THE JOURNAL OF CLINICAL INVESTIGATION ‘Professor Peter Kennedy is… a world authority on infectious diseases of the nervous system. This book is very readable and entertaining at the same time and sheds some light into how fate sometimes determines the outcome of a medical career. Professor Peter Kennedy has immersed himself totally in this commitment to the eradication of trypanosomiasis and his book is a testament to that.’--SCOTTISH MEDICAL JOURNAL ‘This popular science book conveys the magnitude of disease produced by sleeping sickness, combined with the adventure and challenges of learning about the disease in “the dark continent”. ‘‘Kennedy elegantly details his sojourns into Africa, with its rich fabric of physical beauty, people, spirit, and mystery that quickly enthralls the reader.’ ‘once started, it is head to put down. It is a book you will want to share with family, friends, and colleagues.’ –NEUROLOGY ‘Peter Kennedy… has taken up and championed the cause of Sleeping Sickness in Africa with enthusiasm and commitment’--‘Kennedy write to inform and persuade the lay reader’ ‘This is not a dry academic book, rather it reveals a clinical scientist who delights in his work and who shares his enthusiasm with his readers.’ --BRAIN

English Summary/英文概要: Max and Tine should be having the summer of their lives. Young and intoxicated by love they have gone to the Greek island of Tine’s childhood holidays to spend time together, alone at last. Drunk on wine, the heat and each other they wander around naked, like residents of Eden. But there’s a snake in the garden and as time passes Tine becomes more and more certain that they are being watched. Max and Tine arrive on the Greek island of her childhood holidays. Both are in their mid twenties and this is their first serious relationship. Max is relatively inexperienced with women and his previous encounters have been predominantly sexual. With Tine he feels an emotional bond, and he wants to get to know her better, both sexually and emotionally. It ought to be perfect - a secluded house on a stunning cove; rich local food and wine; swimming, sunbathing. And yet the minute they arrive Tine seems tense. As the days progress, she seems increasingly distant and is obsessed that the house is being watched. The present day is interspersed with scenes from Max’s childhood. A talented child from a relatively poor family, he received a scholarship to a prestigious boarding school but nothing has prepared the young boy for the loneliness and vulnerability of living away from his family. Max is dyslexic and soon this creates difficulties with his teachers and his classmates. But when things come to a head, Max finds a way of surviving. Back in the present day, the idyllic holiday seems to be turning into a nightmare. But can Max find a way back to intimacy and overcome the demons of his past?

MAKING TIME: WHY TIME SEEMS TO PASS AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND HOW TO CONTROL IT |
 |
页数: 0 定价: 0 美元 上传日期: 2010-5-14 |
English Summary/英文概要: Why does time seem to speed up as we get older? Why does it seem to drag when we’re bored or in pain, or to go slowly when we’re in unfamiliar environments? Why does it slow down dramatically in accidents and emergency situations, when sportspeople are ’in the zone’, or in higher states of consciousness? "Making Time" explains why we have these different perceptions of time, suggesting that there are five basic ’laws’ of psychological time and uncovering the factors which cause them. It uses evidence from modern physics and unusual states of consciousness to suggest that our normal sense of time is an illusion, ’created’ by our minds. But perhaps more importantly, on a practical level, this book shows us what we can do to control our sense of time passing, to make it pass slowly or quickly in different situations. It suggests that it is possible for us to live through more time in our lives, and so effectively increase the amount of time which we are alive for. In the final chapter, Steve Taylor uses insights from Buddhism - investigating the practices of mindfulness and meditation - to show how we can actually transcend linear time, and learn to live fully in the present moment.
Chinese Summary/中文概要:
About the Author/作者介绍: Steve Taylor teaches courses on personal development at the University of Manchester CCE and at Salford College. His articles and essays have been published in many magazines and academic journals, such as Resurgence, Paradigm Shift, The Journal of Consciousness Studies and The International Journal of Transpersonal Studies. His previous book The Fall (O Books) has received a great deal of critical acclaim and was chosen as Book of the Year in the Independent on Sunday. He is married with two young children.

101 WHISKIES TO TRY BEFORE YOU DIE |
 |
页数: 0 定价: 0 美元 上传日期: 2010-5-13 |
English Summary/英文概要: 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die is a whisky guide with a difference. It is not an awards list. It is not a list of the 101 ’best’ whiskies in the world in the opinion of some self-appointed whisky guru.It is simply, as it says in the title a guide to 101 whiskies that enthusiasts simply must seek out and try - love them or hate them - to complete their whisky education. What’s more, it’s practical and realistic. Avoiding the deliberately obscure, the ridiculously limited and the absurdly expensive, whisky expert Ian Buxton has scoured the shelves of the world’s whisky warehouses to recommend an eclectic selection of old favourites, stellar newcomers and mystifyingly unknown drams that simply have to be drunk. The book cuts through the clutter, decodes the marketing hype and gets straight to the point; whether from India or America, Sweden or Ireland, Japan or the hills, glens and islands of Scotland here are the 101 whiskies that you really want. Try them before you die - Slainte!

I THINK THEREFORE I AM: ALL THE PHILOSOPHY YOU NEED TO KNOW |
 |
页数: 192 定价: 0 美元 上传日期: 2010-5-13 |
English Summary/英文概要: Philosophers certainly like to make life sound awfully complicated, whether they’re wondering if a falling tree still makes a sound if there’s nobody around to hear it (Berkeley) or declaring that everything in the universe is in a state of flux (Heraclitus). But is philosophy really so complicated? And is it really as irrelevant as it sometimes seems? "I Think, Therefore I Am" is the ideal way to take the fear out of philosophy. Written in an accessible and highly entertaining style, "I Think, Therefore I Am" explains how and why philosophy began, and how, from Greek democracy to Communism, the ways in which we live, learn, argue, vote and even spend our money have their origins in philosophical thought. Beautifully packaged, this is the perfect gift for anyone this Christmas.
