WHY DO SO MANY WOMEN stay in abusive relationships? Why are some afraid to live up to their creative or financial potential? Why do many avoid taking risks or starting intimate relationships? These are good questions, but it might be more illuminating to ask how it is that some women are able to overcome these fears and become amazingly successful and self-actualized. The authors asked the same question and found an interesting answer. Each of the many women they spoke with had experienced a moment of transcendence-a moment in which their fear was overcome by one brief flash of insight, which they would eventually recognize as courage.

THE AUTHORS EXAMINE fear from a number of different viewpoints, exploring common (and often unconscious) fears that women feel, such as fear of success (or failure), intimacy, loneliness, aging, violence, or independence. They point out that there are times when women should be afraid and explain how to protect themselves in these situations. They encourage readers to face and let go of fears that stop them from achieving their potential. At the same time, they offer specific ways women can help themselves, find solutions to problems, and ultimately make positive life choices.

(zh)
